Mold cannot hide in showers or bathtubs, it gives a lot of visual clues, usually black, green, or grey, and may be inconsistent if it’s embedded in your grout inside your bathroom or kitchen. Mold and mildew can be extremely unhealthy if left alone. Mold spores can cause respiratory illness, headaches, nasal congestion, and possibly trigger asthma attacks. There are simple ways to prevent mold and mildew from growing in your tile and grout.
Mold and mildew growth is common in damp muggy areas like your bathroom in the shower, or in the kitchen around the sink. Mold cannot grow in dry areas so it is best to crack open a window and start your fan when you turn on the shower so excess moisture is pushed out of the room. Leave a fan running at least 20 minutes after showering so moisture does not condense to the tile and grout in your bathroom.
Wipe down the walls of tile and bathtub right when finishing your shower. You can do this with a squeegee or a hand towel, whatever is more convenient for you. A towel is best for getting into tight spaces and corners of the grout. These are areas where mold and mildew begin to grow, so getting them dry as possible is best. Keeping your shower and tub clean is another good way to prevent growth.
While weekly maintenance is necessary for the tile and grout in your bathrooms and kitchen, professional cleaning and sealing of your grout should be done every 12-18 months. Keeping your tile sealed will repel moisture from absorbing into the grout preventing any type of growth from occurring. Once mold grows in the grout, it is very difficult to remove it with a cleaning process. In most cases the grout has to be grinded out and replaced.
